Tennessee State Prison. Obviously not in Detroit but sometimes we feature locations from other areas. Tennessee State Prison is an abandoned and historic penitentiary. It was built in 1898 and it closed in 1992. James Earl Ray Narrowly escaped the electric chair here when he accepted a plea for the murder of Martin Luther King. Johnny Cash recorded an album here entitled “A Concert Behind Prison Walls.” Many movies have been filmed at Tennessee State Prison as well, including “The Green Mile” and “The Last Castle.” Here are a selection of photos from behind those abandoned walls.
